Why Use Liquid Gypsum?
Liquid gypsum is used to fix sodium-affected and compacted soils: its calcium displaces sodium from clay particles, flocculating the clay so water and roots can move again, and it does this in weeks, on established turf, without changing soil pH.

The six real benefits
1. It removes sodium from the rootzone
This is gypsum's headline act. Sodium binds to clay particles and collapses soil structure into an airless paste. Calcium from gypsum displaces that sodium, which then leaches away with rain or irrigation. If your soil test shows high sodium (common near coasts, under recycled irrigation water, or where de-icing salt runs off), no other affordable treatment does this job. 2. It restores structure in compacted soil
Flocculated clay forms crumbs with air gaps between them; dispersed clay forms a brick. By flocculating the clay fraction, gypsum helps compacted rootzones re-form the pore space that aeration alone creates only temporarily. 3. It improves drainage and infiltration
Water moves through pores. Restore the pore structure and infiltration rates rise. That is the difference between a pitch that sheds a downpour and one that ponds. On waterlogged lawns, this is usually the benefit people are actually buying.
4. It feeds calcium without touching pH
Unlike lime, gypsum supplies calcium without significantly raising soil pH. That makes it the calcium source of choice where pH is already correct (most managed turf) or where you must not push it higher.
5. It supplies sulphur
Sulphur deposition from the atmosphere has fallen sharply for decades, and sulphur deficiency is increasingly common in UK soils. Gypsum is roughly one-fifth sulphur; GYP-FLO analyses at 25% sulphur w/v, so a structural treatment doubles as nutrition.
6. Liquid form works on living turf, fast
The reason to choose liquid specifically: 5-micron particles wash into the rootzone through a sprayer or irrigation system and get to work in weeks, with no cultivation and no surface disruption. The two honest limits
Soil scientists rightly point out that gypsum is not a cure-all; Washington State University's review "The Myth of Gypsum Magic" is the classic reference. Two limits matter:
- Non-sodic, well-structured soil won't improve much. If your clay is not sodium-affected or compacted, gypsum has little structure left to fix. Test first; treat what the test shows.
- It cannot beat physics. A high water table, a buried pan, or land-drainage failure needs engineering, not chemistry. Gypsum improves how soil handles water; it does not lower the water table.

Frequently asked questions
How quickly does liquid gypsum work?
On sodium-affected or compacted soil, expect measurable change within weeks and visible turf response within a season, versus months to years for surface-applied granular. Repeat applications maintain the effect while sodium keeps arriving (e.g. from irrigation water).
Is liquid gypsum safe for grass, pets and wildlife?
Gypsum is calcium sulphate: a naturally occurring mineral, non-toxic and pH-neutral. Applied at label rates it will not scorch turf and poses no meaningful risk to pets or wildlife.
When is the best time to apply?
Any time the ground is not frozen, but applications ahead of rain or irrigation work best: water carries the fine particles into the rootzone and leaches the displaced sodium away. Rates and timing are covered in the application rate guide.
