Liquid Gypsum Application Rate: How Much to Use & When
Liquid gypsum application rates should come from two places: your product's label and your soil test. Programmes typically run little-and-often (several applications per season watered into the rootzone) rather than one heavy annual dose. Here is how to set a rate you can defend.

Why there is no single universal rate
The right dose depends on how much sodium you are displacing, your clay content, and the product's analysis and particle size. A 35%-calcium professional suspension like GYP-FLO delivers far more active calcium per litre than a light retail formulation, so their labels differ by design. Copying a rate from a forum post for a different product is how people end up disappointed. Always work from the label of the product in your tank.
The three inputs that set your rate
- Soil test sodium (ESP): mildly affected soil (ESP 6-10%) needs a maintenance programme; genuinely sodic soil (ESP 15%+) needs reclamation rates at the top of the label range, repeated until retests come down.
- What the water brings in: if irrigation water carries sodium, gypsum is offsetting a continuous input; the programme is ongoing, sized to the water quality, not a one-off fix.
- The label range: reputable products state rates per hectare or per 100 m² and a dilution. Stay inside them; more is not better, because calcium in excess displaces potassium and magnesium too.
Typical programme shapes
- Sports turf and golf (maintenance): two to four applications across the growing season through the sprayer, each watered in, aligned with aeration where possible.
- Reclamation of sodic ground: higher label rates, repeated at intervals, with deliberate leaching irrigation between applications to flush displaced sodium below the rootzone. Retest before each round.
- Domestic lawns: retail liquid gypsum labels commonly cover in the region of 100-200 m² per litre of concentrate. A spring and an autumn application is the usual pattern for waterlogged lawns. See liquid gypsum for lawns.
Timing: water does half the work
Gypsum only acts once its particles are in contact with clay, and displaced sodium only leaves if water carries it away. Apply ahead of rain or follow with irrigation; on compacted ground, apply after aeration so the suspension reaches depth. Frozen or bone-dry ground wastes product.

Frequently asked questions
Can I apply too much liquid gypsum?
Yes, not because gypsum is toxic (it is pH-neutral and non-scorching), but because excess calcium displaces potassium and magnesium you want to keep. Stay within label rates and retest annually rather than stacking applications.
Does liquid gypsum need watering in?
Yes. The fine particles work in the rootzone, not on the leaf. A few millimetres of irrigation or a timely shower moves the suspension into the soil where it belongs.
How soon can I re-apply?
Most professional programmes space applications four to eight weeks apart during the growing season. For reclamation work, let a leaching cycle finish and check a retest before the next round; the retest, not the calendar, decides. Unsure what your test means? Send it to us.
