Liquid Gypsum vs Granular Gypsum: Which Is Better?

Liquid gypsum works faster and applies through sprayers and irrigation; granular gypsum is cheaper per kilo but slow and bulky. For established turf, liquid usually wins. For bare soil you can cultivate, granular can be the smarter buy.

Liquid gypsum and granular gypsum are the same chemistry (calcium sulphate) in very different physical forms, and the form changes almost everything about how you use them. Here is the comparison grounds teams actually need.

Why particle size decides it

Gypsum only works while it is dissolving: calcium ions displace sodium on clay particles and flocculate the clay into larger crumbs, opening the soil up. A 5-micron particle has enormously more surface area per kilo than a granule, so far more of what you pay for actually dissolves in the rootzone. In four years of field trials behind GYP-FLO, the fine particles remained active in the soil where coarser bulk gypsum did not.

When granular is genuinely the better buy

  • Bare ground you can cultivate: digging granular gypsum into a new bed or pre-seeding surface gives it the contact and time it needs, at the lowest cost.
  • Very large areas on tight budgets: if you can spread and incorporate tonnes per hectare and wait a season or two, bulk gypsum delivers the same chemistry for less money.
  • No spray or irrigation equipment: liquid needs a way to apply it; a garden spreader may be the only realistic tool.

When liquid is the right call

  • Established turf (pitches, fairways, lawns) where you cannot cultivate and need the gypsum down in the rootzone this season, not next.
  • Sodium and salt problems under irrigation, where little-and-often applications through the existing system beat one annual dressing. See managing high-sodium soil.

Frequently asked questions

Is liquid gypsum just dissolved granular gypsum?

No. Gypsum is only slightly soluble in water, so you cannot make an effective liquid by soaking granules. Professional liquid gypsum is a suspension of ultra-fine milled particles kept stable in liquid form; the milling is what you are paying for.

Do liquid and granular gypsum do anything different chemically?

The chemistry is identical: calcium sulphate supplies calcium that displaces sodium and flocculates clay, plus sulphur as a nutrient. Neither form meaningfully changes soil pH. The RHS explains the clay soil chemistry here. Only speed, placement and practicality differ.

Can I use both together?

Yes. A common programme on new construction is granular gypsum cultivated in before seeding, then liquid applications to maintain the rootzone once turf is established.
