Liquid Gypsum for Lawns
Liquid gypsum helps lawns on heavy or compacted clay by flocculating the clay so water drains instead of ponding, applied from a watering can or sprayer, no digging required. It suits waterlogged, moss-prone lawns on clay; it will not fix shade, mowing or fertility problems.

The problem it solves
Most UK lawn misery on clay traces back to one physical fact: the clay has lost its crumb structure, so rain sits on the surface. Grass roots drown, moss loves the permanent damp, and winter traffic turns the whole thing to mud. You cannot dig compost into an established lawn, which is why liquid gypsum, watered in through the surface, is the practical treatment. If that sounds familiar, the underlying cause is usually dispersed or compacted clay: exactly what gypsum treats. If your lawn drains fine and the problem is thin grass in shade, gypsum is not your answer.
How to apply it to a lawn
- Aerate first if you can. A garden fork driven in every 15 cm (or a hollow-tine aerator) gives the suspension channels to reach the rootzone.
- Dilute and apply per the label with a watering can and fine rose, or a pump sprayer for larger lawns.
- Water it in. Apply before rain, or follow with a light watering; the gypsum works in the soil, not on the leaf.

What to expect, honestly
In the first weeks: faster surface drainage after rain. Over a season: deeper rooting, firmer footing, less moss pressure as the surface dries. What it will not do: fix a lawn sitting on builder's rubble, drain a garden below the water table, or compensate for scalping mower blades. Will liquid gypsum kill moss?
Not directly; it is not a moss killer. It removes the waterlogged conditions moss thrives in, which is why lawns treated for drainage see moss retreat over following seasons. Pair it with scarifying for faster results.
Is liquid gypsum safe for children and pets on the lawn?
Yes. Gypsum is a natural, non-toxic, pH-neutral mineral (calcium sulphate). Once watered in, the lawn can be used as normal.
When will I see results?
Surface drainage often improves within two to four weeks of the first watered-in application on responsive clay. Structural change (deeper roots, firmer surface) builds over a full growing season of repeat applications.
