Does Gypsum Work on Clay Soil?

Gypsum works on clay soil when the clay is sodium-affected or structurally collapsed: its calcium displaces sodium and flocculates dispersed particles into crumbs, restoring drainage. On healthy, non-sodic clay it changes little, and anyone selling it as magic for all clay is overselling.

What gypsum actually does

Clay particles carry negative charges and are normally bridged into stable crumbs by calcium ions. When sodium replaces that calcium (from irrigation water, coastal influence, salt runoff) the bridges fail, the particles disperse, and the soil collapses into a structureless mass that ponds when wet and sets like brick when dry. Gypsum is calcium sulphate: it re-supplies calcium, the calcium displaces the sodium, and the freed sodium leaches away. The clay re-flocculates and pore space returns. Compaction responds through the same mechanism: flocculated crumbs resist re-smearing where dispersed clay does not.

Where the evidence says yes

  • Sodic and saline-sodic soils: decades of agricultural research make gypsum the standard reclamation treatment. This is uncontroversial.
  • Compacted, dispersed rootzones under traffic: turf research and our own four years of field trials with GYP-FLO show structural and infiltration improvement, with fine particles staying active where coarse bulk gypsum did not.
  • Crusting soils: gypsum reduces surface crusting on dispersive soils, improving seedling emergence and infiltration.

Where the evidence says no

Washington State University's widely cited review, "The Myth of Gypsum Magic", is blunt: on non-sodic, well-aggregated soil, gypsum does not meaningfully improve texture or drainage. A healthy clay loam with good calcium levels has nothing for gypsum to fix. It also cannot drain a site with a high water table or sealed subsoil; that is a drainage engineering problem, not a chemistry one.

How to tell which clay you have

  1. Get a soil test with exchangeable cations. An exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP) above ~6% means gypsum will almost certainly help; above 15% it is essential.
  2. Read the field signs: water that ponds and turns cloudy (dispersed clay in suspension), surface crusting, soil that smears rather than crumbles. All point to dispersion gypsum can fix.
  3. Check the history: irrigation with borehole or recycled water, coastal exposure, or heavy traffic all push soil toward the sodic/compacted state.

Frequently asked questions

How long does gypsum take to work on clay soil?

On responsive (sodic/compacted) soil: fine-particle liquid gypsum shows infiltration improvement within weeks; granular gypsum takes months to years depending on rainfall and incorporation. One application is rarely the whole programme; see the rate guide.

Can gypsum harm my soil?

At sensible rates gypsum is very safe: pH-neutral, non-toxic, a natural mineral. Extreme over-application can displace potassium and magnesium alongside sodium, which is one more reason to work from a soil test rather than guesswork.

Is gypsum better than lime for clay soil?

They do different jobs: lime adds calcium and raises pH; gypsum adds calcium without moving pH. If your clay is acidic, lime may serve double duty. If pH is already right (true of most managed turf), gypsum is the tool. Our post on decoding soil pH covers when each applies.
